It MOCKS me

You know the word verification thingy all you 'portant bloggers have activated? It. Hates. Me. And the feeling is mutual. Here's how our relationship works:

I punch in my supportive/cheerful/sympathetic/sarcastic comment and press 'Send'.

Immediately little miss Word Verification answers back, quite snippily, with intimidating red letters:

Enter the letters as they are shown in the image.

She even uses a bossy little Warning triangle! Sort of like a veiled threat. Only not veiled. More like an in-your-face 'be afraid...be veeeeeeery afraid' threat. A 'you-are-going-to-lose-your-entire-comment-if-you-don't-do-as-I-say' dare.

Fine. So I look at the stupid letters. But they're in a cursive I have never, ever seen before, unless it's the type that my oldest son tries to pass off as cursive (meaning little miss Word Verification is not just rude but also a lazy bum). I can't tell for sure what's a 'v' and what's a 'w'. Lazy, mean bum.

I punch in the letters while muttering 'what a pain in the butt' under my breath.

Press 'Send'.

What?!

She's back. And this time, I swear the message is bigger, bolder and redder:

Enter the letters as they are shown in the image.

The triangle is larger, too, and more ominous. Like the exclamation mark is ready to jump out of the screen and in my face.

She's got new letters up there now. Fewer this time, and slightly easier to read. It's like she's mocking me. She's clearly thinking I'm so stupid, I need the idiot version. She's trying to make it easy for hopeless little me. The nerve! I'll show her!

Punch, punch, punch... 'Send'

Wait...wait...what?!

Third attempt Word Verification reads as follows: BENDOVR

Sorry.No.Comment.For.You.

I know. I've given up a few times. They're a bloody pain!

Great post, this cracks me up. I too hate these word verification things and therefore will NOT put one on my blog unless I find one darn good reason for it. As of this moment can't think of one. Thanks for commenting.

"BENDOVR"

Oh, that is hysterical! This post cracks me up. I have the same problem. It's part of the reason I don't have word verification on my site - I'm afraid no one will want to go to the trouble to comment. I know, I'm just an open invite for spambots.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who fails the word verification challenge on a regular basis.

My mother one time asked why my blog had an eye test on it. It took me a minute before I got what she was saying. In between gasps of laughter, I explained.

I used to not have verification on my blog, but then I got spammed a whole bunch, so I added it. Sorry.

I hate those verification thingies! I took mine off ages ago, and have had no problem with spammers at all. And what about the blogs where you have to sign up for something in order to comment?

If I start having trouble with spammers, I'll add the WV. Otherwise, no.

Too funny!!

I hate those things too. None on my blog!!

The Lady Who Doesn't Lunch: said...

Got rid of mine - and now all are welcome...

It's like an eye test and I fail it a lot.

My big problem these days is that I changed my bloddy password and can't remember it when I make comments.

Funny post!

So funny because it's true! Is it just me, or are the "words" getting ridiculously long? I always fail the first try, so now I don't even attempt it... I just wait for the warning and the second word to pop up. Eat that, Word Verification!

Misty said...

Yes! Yes!

That is why I took it off my blog. Because I HATE to have to do it. Now, whenever I "flunk" the first one, I always copy my post...just so I don't lose it.

It is not the v's and the w's that get me, it is the v's and the u's. Gah. Darn spammers; If it weren't for you...

Chantal said...

ha ha ha that is too funny! Even word verification has a sense of humour!

Candy said...

Oh, I can't count how many times I just thought "Bah, my comment wasn't that important anyway." and gave up.

Maybe it's time for a word verification revolution?

Mighty Morphin' Mama said...

oops sorry;)
I didn't even know you could take that off of your blog. Maybe I should go looking for that!

Gina said...

Heidi, you are so funny! I hope it wasn't my blog that gave you trouble but it wouldn't surprise me... because it wouldn't let ME comment this morning!

Victoria said...

Hilarious! But, I didn't know I could remove it. Wait, do I even have it? Is it sad I don't know??

Bendovr. *Snicker*

I'm getting rid of them. If I start getting, what?, spam, I guess?, I'll bring them back.

Thanks for making me laugh. I can never parse the letters either. It makes me feel old.

I agree with you -- they're getting to be indecipherable. I've given up more than once. Maybe I'll disable the word verification on my blog. I don't want to miss out on any of your thoughtful, funny, supportive comments.

I thought I was the only idiot this was happening too - you are NOT alone! See ya.

Holy crap, I may have just peed myself laughing at this post. This just might be the best post I read all year!

I hate that CAPTCHA crap too. I had to finally turn it on last week, because I was spammed (over 400 emails in ONE night) all related to some kkk, nazi crap - it was BAD.

I heart your blog!

TheOneTrueSue said...

Bwa ha ha ha So funny, so true. Here is the ultimate compliment though: In your honor, I turned off word verification on my blog. ;>

Valarie said...

I am laughing so hard right now. I hate Little Miss Word Verification as well and she HATES me! I just use the comment moderator on my site. That'll show her!

Jennifer said...

Now that is funny! I always feel like the word verification is like a little test I have to pass before I am allowed to comment. I usually fail when Ws and Vs are involved.

Heidi said...

I love when I get an EMPTY box and if I don't make up letters I will lose my comment! WTH? And I didn't even know I could take that off my site. I don't even know if I have one, I will have to check.

Aliki2006 said...

I almost never get it right on the first try, if that makes it any better!!!

Mrs. G. said...

I hate these damn things. I keep getting the letters wrong and my frustration builds and then I have to go eat nine oreo cookies to settle down. I hate to say this, but I will often avoid leaving comments to bypass these things.

Christie said...

I hate it, too. Thanks for not having one on your blog, BTW. It always takes me a few tries.

suchsimplepleasures said...

i've not sent comments because i got so frustrated with that stupid thing!!!
hysterical.

Hopped over from Arkie Mommy. Congrats on your award :)

That is hysterical!! Too funny. I hate the word verification too. Never get it right the first time.

Julie Pippert said...

LOL I REALLY REALLY hate those. I have blogged about it too. Snoskred has blogged it for me LOL.

People TURN IT OFF!!!

If anyone really worries about spam? Just turn on comment moderation. Dries it up, no problem, and NO FUNKY WORD GAMES!

Is it a j or an i? Is it a g or a q?

I took the damn thing off. And I'm so glad I did, because you wouldn't have commented and I wouldn't have found you!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by.

Amen sister-friend! I can't believe you got Sue to take hers off! They are pretty annoying, but if it keeps the spam away...

LOVING your site, btw. I had a pen-pal in Finland, her name was Susanna Raissainen. Do you know her? *snicker*

Anonymous said...

Sometimes if the font is sans serif I can't tell if it is a q or a p. And with one font the j can be an i. Very annoying.

I don't have the captcha function on my blog and have yet to be spammed - but I've a pretty small readership. Small but brilliant.

Kyla said...

HA! BENDOVR. Awesome. I think the most I've ever done it was 6 times? I hate it too and yet, I have it turned on. I was getting spammed on older posts and it was driving me crazy so I turned it on again. I'll probably turn it off in a month or so and see how it goes.

Ice Cream said...

That is way too spooky. I once got a a word verification that was ten letters long and used all of the unknown letters. I had to keep looking down thinking, "X?, Z?, Q?, where are those pesky little letters?" People with word verification should just write, "I don't really want you to comment."

Cathy, Amy and Kristina said...

I feel your pain. My eyesight is so bad that I often have to squint to make out the letters.

And even then I am reprimanded.

I added it to mine a few weeks ago after I was deluged with spam in a matter of days. Am hoping to remove it in the near future.

Awesome Mom said...

Haha! I hate that too! I have a three time limit. If I have to do it more than that the comment is not really worth the effort. That is one reason I have moderation on instead. It kills the spam and saves my readers from having to jump through hoops just to leave a comment. An added bonus is that I can delete the silly comments my mom leaves before anyone has to read them.

MadMad said...

Ha! I hate those things, too - and don't even get why people put them in. Knock wood, but I have never gotten spam, or so much as a negative comment.

OK. Darn. Now I'm going to get them, aren't I?

Unknown said...

hahaha- same thing here--but you said It SO MUCH BETTER.. i found out you need to have cookies, or something activated-- or you need to be eating cookies to make it work.. not sure-- I clicked somewhere, and some place else... and have not had thatproblem again-- gee, I was a lot of help, wasn't I?

Suzanne said...

I hate the word verification thing. I always have to squint and just hope that I got it right. The q's and the g's are especially problematic!

Gina said...

I hate them too, but my HaloScan is refusing to work!

But really, I hate spam like nobody's business, those people are ruthless, and if it isn't on, it gets ugly.

Stomper Girl said...

Ha! I also frequently fail Word Verifications. But I didn't like the spam comments I got if I didn't have it....

Kat said...

HaHA! That was hilarious! Here I thought it was just me who had a problem with those things. It had me feeling all self conscious thinking it was a dyslexia thing, when clearly it is just a "I'm here to mess with people" thing.
Thanks for this post. :)

I fail all the time with them. I used to think that I had great vision before these wrod verifications started. I constantly have to re-type.

Karen MEG said...

I've just gotten used to them, to be honest I put it on because I got some of the rudest spam at one point. Maybe I'll try taking it off again if it's such a pain! I saw that you lost one comment on mine to cyberspace!

thirtysomething said...

Me too! Because I have such issues with it on others' blogs, I am going to OBLITERATE it from my blog I think.
Love the BENDOVR. Perfect.

Amy Y said...

I don't have it! You can comment stress free at my house! :) So far *knocks on wood* I haven't gotten any bots...
I hate that f*$king b*tch of a verification thingie too :)

I can't stand those things either. I still visit those blogs and try to comment but it doesn't always work.
