...to resolve the age old conflict between Darwinists and Creationists.
I present to you:
Benjamin's Theory Of Evolutionary Creation
B: "Do you know who created people, mamma?"
Me: "Do you?"
B: "The God of the Earth did."
Me: "Cool."
B: "Yes, he created a fish, and the fish went onto land and developed legs."
Me: "Oh, and then the fish became human?"
B: "Yeah."
Me: "You sure do know a lot!"
Benjamin is quiet for a little bit, and it's clear something's bothering him:
B (with disgust in his voice): "Except some people came from gorillas!"
Me (definitely not laughing): "But clearly not you."
B: "No, I came the fish way!"

We took a mental health day yesterday, packed boys and gear into our little car and drove off to Kongsberg ski centre for a lovely day of downhill skiing. Our first time out this year. It was fantastic! Because we are the only bad-parents-who-let-our-kids-miss-school-to-ski in Norway, we essentially had the slopes to ourselves. Not once did we have to wait for a chair lift, and as we skied down, we rarely saw others on our way. Being bad parents is definitely the way to go, especially the week before Christmas, when it appears that all the children do at school is sing carols and talk about what they would like from Santa.

In much less exciting news, I am absolutely inundated with work this week, which leads me to question why the need for Scandinavian translations always intensifies right before a holiday? Could it be because everyone knows that Heidi has not finished her Christmas shopping yet? And her house is a pigsty dearly in need of a good scrubbing down?
Because, really, deep down, I know the Universe is all about me, me, me, me.
And unfortunately, at the moment, not so much about you. I am sorry, my bloggy friends, that I haven't been able to visit you as much as I'd like to. I will definitely be making the rounds as soon as I can get these pesky assignments off my desk! And the shopping done. And the house cleaned. (And maybe just a teeny, tiny bit more skiing...)

Out of the mouths of babes!
Now if we could only get the adult religious leaders to understand this simple concept...
A clean house is overrated - just don't let the kids write in the dust!
At last I have found someone who understands me - house in a pigsty, piles of work on the desk, Christmas looming and only one desire: to go skiing!
Pesky is right. Tell them you'll get back to them next month.
And one question: I thought it was dark almost all day there right now. Do you ski in the dark?
Whoops - I just remembered - electric lights. I'm up in the middle of the night with croup (my own, this time) and my brain isn't working. But, how much of the day is dark where you are?
YAY for bad parents who take their kids skiing--especially the kid who came "the fish way." HAHAHA!
And this bloggy friend forgives you everything because you provided such good pictures for us to look at :)!
I'm all for being a bad parent! I'm planning to take mine out of school for a week in the spring...unfortunately not to ski, though Hubs suggested that, but sitting in a hotel all day with the baby while HE skiis? SO not my thing. Though if anyone knows a good babysitter in Tremblant...
I had to take a couple days off to play catch up at home and now I feel like I am going ot have to spend 15 hours straight on here catching up on all the blogs I missed out on!! (Ok, not really)
I take my kids out of shcool to go to Disney World periodically. I figure a little fun won't hurt anyone.
Good luck with finishing your work! And with all those other holiday activities. I heartily support the mental health day -- I hope you get to partake in another one soon!
Everyone needs a holiday, even bloggers. If you don't post regularly, we'll understand and be here waiting for you to return.
I will share that with my husband, the staunch and not so nice about it Darwinist/Atheist.
Although the only god he believes in is the Flying Spaghetti Monster, He who made Mountains, Trees and Midgets. So I'm not sure how he'll take this.
Nice view of evolution (unless you come from the gorilla side...then? not so much.)
You're my kind of (bad) parent. I let my kids play hooky last week so we could bake, decorate, window shop and see a movie. It was perfect.
Hope your work pressures ease soon. Enjoy your holiday! Merry Christmas!
I am definitely with you on the Bad Parent thing. :)
And I am so impressed (and amused) by Benjamin's theories!
GL with extra work and I think there is deep understanding everywhere about Being Busy just now.

Using My Words
Heidi, you are a BIG CHICKEN...just strolling along...HAHAHA! Good one! And speak of good, it ALL is. As I said, every now and then I just like to get a good debate going. Not often, just every now and then. I think it has to do with unresolved rebelliousness. And NOT having parents that took me skiing, or brought me to NORWAY, for pete's sake. It's just a wonder I'm not much worse :)!!!! I still JUST LOVE "the fish way." Makes me laugh even more!
In my opinion, B. is BRILLIANT. I have always wondered why more folks can't embrace the notion that God got the evolution ball rolling. He flipped the switch so to speak. This boy has future world leader written all over him.
He came the fish way, eh? LOL.
bad parents are the best especially the fishy kind;-)
Don't sweat it. Skiing is MUCH better than cleaning!
Just a teeny bit???!
Of course the universe is about me, er, I mean you. You, of course.
Happy Holidays darlin'. I'm so glad we've met.
Enjoy the skiing! You have one smart little boy. :)
B boy looks adorable in a tie, skulls notwithstanding. He's just a cool kid, KWIM? And a smartie!
Work, hah! I know exactly what you're talking about now, my friend. But skiing, that really needs to take priority, especially this time of year, and ESPECIALLY where you are, I mean, come on!!!
I think I might choose to be a 'bad parent too,' you have to buck the system sometimes.
Best wishes
This is my calling card or link"Whittereronautism"which takes you straight to my new blog.
You are the BEST kind of mom. The one who knows that it is far more important to have some family time SKIING instead of singing songs and eating too many snacks in school. YEAH! It sounds like you had a perfect day. What a way to kick off the holidays.
My hubby and I are planning on teaching the boys to ski some time in the next couple of weeks. Just get in the basics anyway. We'll see how it goes.
The fish way sounds much more fun to me.
Great Santa head crafts! And lovely pictures, I can't believe how peaceful it looks where you were skiing.
I love the water so much, I'm thinking I came the fish way too. Cute ~ thanks for sharing :)
I LOVE that you took a mental health day to ski! Good for you, Mama!
Hope things calm down at work soon so you can ski some more and enjoy the rest of your Holiday season!
Oh fun. A day off to ski is not all that bad! I'll post about what Kevin did to make you "feel better". :-)
Ha ha ha. This is a great out-of-the-mouths-of-babes story.
Can't answer your Scandinavia question, other than that Scandinavia rocks.
I'm proud of you for being such a bad parent. I wish I could be a bad parent like that more often. So, how do you know whether you are a fish-human or a gorilla-human?
