Of Wine and Whine

We had a great 65th birthday par-tay on Friday for my father. He seemed very, very happy, and that was really what we wanted most of all. My siblings and I all made and brought appetizers, food and a marzipan cake for dessert.

Judging from the enthusiastic food reviews, we did well. Of course, I've never been to a party where the guests openly admit that the food sucks. So who really knows? I choose to believe that they raved more than they had to, and therefore, that the food was actually kind of good. I'm a glass half full kinda girl (stop making that choking sound, Mike).

My mother supplied fabulouso Italian Valpolicella red wines.

[Cue reverie music]

I.Love.Valpolicella.Wines.

And so does my sister - my partner in crime. So much so that by the end of the night, we felt compelled to finish off the last bottle ourselves, without sharing with our guests. Yes, we did. We are generous souls.

Which may be why I woke up with someone else's body yesterday morning. Someone who's slow, heavier than me, and who gets nauseous when making quick or sudden movements.

When I groaned to Mike that I am cutting out red wine for life, he had the nerve to laugh at me. And under normal circumstances, that would have offended me mightily.

But all I could think of was how much fun it was going to be to take several 11-year-olds out for pizza and a movie that afternoon in celebration of Christopher's birthday.

In someone else's body!

Oh, yuck!

Last weekend a friend and I shared a bottle of champagne.

It was the first time in my life I got sick from alcohol.

I told the Sergeant no champagne for awhile....but that bottle sure was good! :)

I have got to get some of that wine. Any wine that gives me a different body? I'm tryin' it! Back in the day, a little rum always made me a much better dancer, so I can imagine how this wine works--HAHA!

I really hope you were able to "enjoy" Christopher's birthday party, even though you were only "half there." HAHAHA. I sincerely hope your back to being ALL HEIDI soon :)!!!

Taking a bunch of 11 year olds anywhere would be hard enough...much less having to do it in someone else's body! Hope you were able to survive and hopefully you didn't have to go to Chuck E. Cheese! (11 is probably too old for that and they probably don't have then in Norway anyway! Hopefully!)

I'm guessing it was not fun. At all. It takes me days to recover from a hangover now. Just one more benefit of getting older.

D'oh! I have never had that kind of wine but it sounds delicious.
Hope you find your body soon :)

Glad to hear that the party was a success (despite waking up in someone else's body!). Hope you were able to make it through the pizza and movie alright :)

My brother in law LOVE Valpolicella so much that he said me wouldn't come to our wedding if we didn't serve it.

I hope the pizza party was fun - sometimes all that sodium is just the ticket after a night of hearty red.

I love red wine but it sure doesn't take much to make me feel like I'm "in someone else's body" like you describe. I hope you feel better soon. Sounds like a wonderful party. Wishing you best at the eleven year old party.

Funny, I don't drink but I would have eaten so many appetizers that I would have woken up with the same "different body" experience.

Oh no! I've been hungover exactly once, at BlogHer, and the thought of taking out a bunch of 11 year olds in that state makes ME want to hide under the covers. Good luck!

I actually had a few too many glasses of wine last night too - not a good feeling at all.

Yes, at some point we get a bit too old to drink that way....

Did somebody say marzipan cake?

Ooooohhhh Heidi, red wine is the devil, especially when you're loving it so. Glad to hear that your Dad's party went so well, and hope Christopher's will be a lot more fun than it will be for your "other body". Meanie Mike for laughing ;)

Ditto on the Valpolicella and passing that good point!

And glad the birthday was good. :)

Bleh, hangovers! I had the WORST HANGOVER OF MY LIFE 2 Christmases ago and it was brutal! I hope that yours has gently faded away and that you're currently enjoying your rowdy pizza party.

How nice that you are waiting for CJ's call. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you keeping him in your thoughts. It's really nice to know that I'm not the only one.

Truly thanks...

Oh man! this happened to me about a year ago. I had a Martinis and Manicures party with a bunch of girlfriends and made the mistake of making the martinis myself. I have no clue how to bartend and the results were horrid! And not just for me. I got several calls the next day---late in the day of course---from friends complaining that they were feeling, well, heavy too. This year, I'm hosting another party but we're calling it Pedicures and Pellegrinos!

Let's review the ``body'' of evidence. What a great post .....

Was it Australian wine?

Oooh, red wine can truly be a killer for me... and my husband would have laughed at me, too.

Pizza is perfect for a hangover. It has lots of nutritional value, really.
I hope your body is back!

And this is why I limit my wine intake to 2 days/week.

;-)

I can't stop until way toooooo late.

Hope you have managed to have lots of water through the day. It will make you recover faster.

Ha! It does sound like an acceptable way to get through the hangover, though--in a darkened cinema!

I'm glad you had such a good time! I'm not a big wine drinker (more Pina Colada/Dacquari/tequilla girl) - but I do love a good time with my sister - sounds like you had fun! See you tomorrow Heidi - back in "your" body I hope. Kellan

I've never tried Valpolicella, but now you've sold me on it.

Oh boy, I do not envy you - the hangover OR having to go to the movies with kids with a hangover. Eeek. Hope you are feeling better :>

Kat said...

Oh yipes. I know how you feel. Nothing worse that handling loud, crazy kids with a hangover.
Good luck!

Oh! Poor you, overindulgence can really bite.
Hope your son's party was fun anyway and that you had a terrific weekend.

I'm glad it was a good party!

Marzipan cake? I think I need more details about this.

Gina said...

Valpolicella and marzipan cake.. oh yum! Honestly, I think it would be worth the hangover. I hope your pizza party wasn't too painful.

You are so awesome!I wish I could kid-nap you for a few days....you could bring a bottle....for me, since you are offa it;)
Sorry that I laughed, Dave would have laughed at me if I said that, so I totally relate.

Hope that the "other body" got you through the afternoon ok!

My husband always swears off alcohol after an evening like that, and I always laugh at him too.
I hope the kid birthday party was not to painful.

Now I want to taste a Valpolicella wine for the first time....

I just had to come back today to enquire if the body snatchers have returned your *real* body yet? HAHAHA! You have been in my thoughts and prayers, Heidi--ahhh, reminds me SO much of those bad ole GOOD OLE DAYS! :)

red wine pre drinking no hangover recipe:
take 2 capsules milk thistle, 500 mg each with one large glass of water. take 1 capsule rose hips.
as evening progresses take 2 more capsules of milk thistle with many glasses of water- think 1 glass of water per glass of wine. in the morning if you are in the least foggy or nauseous take 2 capsules alpha lipoic acid. ( all found at grocer/drugstore)
guaranteed to work

Hahaha! I remember the days when we used to chug shot after shot of tequila and really not even have a problem the next day. Now two glasses of wine can RUIN me for the next day... ah well.
