Here's what we found as we arrived at the cottage on Friday afternoon:
Yep, instead of a cottage, we found a roof.
This is Mike bravely trying to gain access to the missing cottage, and its much coveted snow shovel:
We finally managed to dig out way into the cottage, where we lit a cozy fire and fixed a quick pizza dinner. Then, because we are crazy, we headed out into the snowfest again:
Headlights in the dark are a brilliant idea, especially when you've lost your legs:
(Please...I know! He puts the hat on himself...)
On Sunday, I was raring to go for a longer stretch, and Christopher kindly volunteered yet again, while Benjamin and Mike went on their own. I, of course, picked the best day, as we had gloriously sunny weather.
All in all, Christopher probably covered 23-24 km this weekend; not bad for an 11 year old without a whole lot of cross country skiing practice.
As far as B boy is concerned, he needs a bit more practice, but we are hoping he'll do the 10k before Easter. That's our goal, not his.

Wow... I'm the first commenter!
That amount of snow is totally inconceivable to me... but it looks absolutely breathtaking!
And my kids put on their hats the very same way. Makes me crazy.
I love it when people embrace the elements and enjoy themselves!
What great photos!
WOW - the kids are doing great with X-country skiing, very cool!
I suspect that's what the family cabins (telemark region) look like in the winter, too. :-)
G's parents usually make their first trek out each year at Easter... then spend most of the summer there.
Looks like fun though, if you like skiing and sledding!
It looks like so much fun!! I haven't been cross country skiing since high school. I prefer downhill (and have my own skis) but cross country is fun, too. And great exercise!
It's so crazy to think of snow up to a roof when we don't have any at all here.
That looks like great fun. (of course minus the shoveling).
What a beautiful place to spend the weekend.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
You are living my dream! SERIOUSLY, I dream about having a cabin up on in the mountains. I cannot WAIT for my kids to be old enough to cross-country ski. We're introducing my 3-year-old daughter to alpine skiing this weekend. We'll remember to bring a shovel in case of inclement weather. :-)
oh wow! it looks like you had a wonderful time. my boys (husband included) love the snow. your boys are very handsome. have a great day!
Oh Heidi...the beauty of it all, even with cabin-obliterating pile of snow! I loved the x-country skiing pix; it reminds me of my high school days, too, when I used to do that. Now I don't even think I could get going...HA!
Your Benjamin? He seems to me like such a FUN kid and somehow his hat and headlight seem to be so HIM! Isn't it amazing how much they change between the age Benjamin is at and the age Christopher is at? What a wonderful time in their lives, no matter what age they are!
And I absolutely LOVE all your pix!
Gorgeous photos.
Snow photographs so beautifully that I always feel like I should like it more - but I don't....
WHOA. That is a lot of snow! I am too jealous! Looks like a blast. Pictures are great!
Great photos, H. For once, I don't have to feel jealous. It snowed here last night and the schools are closed!!!
Oh. My. Gosh. I'm so jealous. That looks like a DREAM! So much snow! We're lucky if we get an inch or so a year. Beautiful!!
Aw man - what a difference! When I first saw the pic of the cottage in my bloglines i thought for sure you guys were turning around and driving home. I'm glad you didn't. So have you put a snow shovel in the car yet? Sounds like an absolutely wonderful weekend, though - and what great exercise for the boys!
Those photos are amazing.
That looks like my idea of a perfect weekend. I'm fervently wishing we get more snow here!
Wonderful photos! These really should have a wider audience so I have put your link on my blog. Hope that is ok with you all?
Snow! I am always jealous when I come here.
This a a lot of beautiful white snow - it looks glorious!!! Another fun weekend at the cabin - it looks like you had a blast. I'm so glad your children are getting to experience this wonderful place - these fabulous times. Have a great day Heidi - see you later. Kellan
That sounds (and looks) like heaven. What a fabulous weekend!!!! And thanks for all the photos. I can't believe all that snow!!!!
Look at all that snow!
I'm so envious of your winter weekends at the cottage!
I'd play in the snow with B any day while you three went off on your long treks!
(I'd even let him put his own hat on.)
I used to cross country ski with my mom when I was young, she was really into it, but when I got older I really started to enjoy downhill instead. I need to try cross country again someday, it'd be much better for my tired old body!
Wow - that's amazing! Love the pics, too! So beautiful!
Now that's a LOT of snow!! What fun (once it was all shoveled out, of course). Glad you had such a great weekend!!
Wow. That is a lot of snow! Crazy amounts actually.
What a great weekend. Think of the amazing memories you are creating for your boys!
My youngest boy wants to run a "kid's race". I had no idea.
All that snow! I love it!
Now THAT is what I call a snow day. I would trade a lifetime in my rainy weather for just a day in that snow. Enjoy!
Those pictures are incredible! You guys always seem like you are having so much fun as a family, it really warms my heart!
Good grief, I have never seen so much snow in my life! Looks like you all knew how to make the most of it though!
What a wonderful way to spend time together. The pictures are wonderful, although, I am anxiously waiting for spring to arrive.
Envious. That's what I am. But I'm glad it was a good weekend for you all!
Gorgeous! I remember snow like that--it was fantastic and thrilling!
Fantastic! We are dreaming of more snow. Every time we head out to the cottage we have to skidoo in the ditches. It is finally blizzarding out and -40 with the windchill. It sure wont be anything like what you have but it is snowing....and pretty so I will sit by the cozy fire and not complain:)
What beautiful pictures!
I may stop complaining about the amount of snow we get in Maine!!
Hallie
What a fun trip!!!
Wow, what fun. Yet again. That snow and the photos are both amazing!
That fresh white stuff looks sooo inviting! Love it!!!
Those are wonderful photos. Your trip looks like so much fun.
Oh that snow looks so beautiful and ...cold! Picture perfect!
And Benjamin's hat... I dig it! (he's too cute!)
Wow, those are amazing photos!
Looks like the trip was a lot of fun.
That looks fabulous!
And I bet Christopher slept really well all weekend, too!
You had me at the headlights.
Looks like a lotta fun, though I am not a snow-weather girl.
Wow! Look at all that snow! Looks like a great place to spend the weekend!
WOW - now that is a lot of snow!!!! Love the pictures of the boys buried in it! Looks like you had a nice weekend together! We were supposed to go away skiing this past weekend too, but my son came down with a sore throat. We ended up staying home instead. Oh well, I am starting to get anxious for spring so that everyone will be healthy again!
Kimmy
That is SOME show. It looks like fun, but the idea of digging out the cabin sounds a bit daunting.
Are you sure you're not really in Alaska?
Cheers
How amazing! It is just so beautiful there and I love your life together, the kids are doing great on their skiing, wow!
I am aching to get out in our new snow, it is drifting everywhere, but the -30 degrees C is keeping me inside. I am a wimp now that I am a grownup:)
I'm glad that someone is able to enjoy the snow and cold weather. The sight of the buried cottage would have sent me packing back home. I might have stayed for pizza though ;)
oh good lord..i'd have turned right around and drove back to where i'd come from. you are ferocious!
You win. Definitely more snow than Michigan. ;-)
NOw that is just IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!
Oooh that looks like so much fun! And makes our snow accumulation look pithy!
fun, fun, fun!
That does look amazing.
Now about those bum trays -- are they sold in Canada? Do they have another name? They just look like so much fun. And they'd put an end to the "mommy, pull me back up the hill" whine-fests that I usually endure when sledding.
This is TRULY a family adventure!
Gorgeous, gorgeous photos. The sky and snow look so inviting as does the cottage. It is times like those that I love winter, but since we aren't skiing right now, I am ready for spring.
That looks like ALOT of fun. Wow. AM impressed by your fitness! Yeay YOU!
